With 18 cultural events in seven locations over three days, the inaugural Irish Festival Fribourg/Freiburg brought the best of Ireland to Fribourg on the weekend of October 6-8, 2023.
Switzerland’s first full festival of Irish culture offered a rich programme of Irish literature, music, cinema, food and drink. The whiskey tasting sessions with John Callely, the writing workshop, the Belfast documentary Young Plato and the public lectures were just some of the highlights.
Authors John Boyne, Anne Griffin, Sarah Moore Fitzgerald, Nuala O’Connor and Padraig Rooney received a warm Fribourg welcome, as did The Dixie Micks and The Celtic Cello, playing to full houses.
Heartfelt thanks to all our partners, sponsors, volunteers, guests and audience members from near and far. You made the festival a great success!
Our literary programme is the cornerstone of the festival. Discover the works and inspiration of our guest authors. The Celtic Cello is the hauntingly beautiful creation of Clíodhna Ní Aodáin. Her one-woman show has the feel of both a grand theatrical performance and a visit with a cherished friend. Playing in the chapel of Hôpital des Bourgeois on Sunday, 8 October.
Born under a banshee’s spell years ago on a foggy March evening in a medieval alley of Fribourg, this group has Irish blood in their veins and a great deal of passion for the

Traditional music sessions are a fixture of Irish culture still thriving today, familiar to anyone who has travelled around the country and sampled the nightlife. Come raise a pint at our closing act, a trad session happening at Banshees' Lodge pub on Sunday, 8 October.

“I developed a certain fascination for the Emerald Isle at a young age. Far away and very different from Switzerland, that's how I imagined it. I was not disappointed by the friendliness of its inhabitants, the barren landscape, the wide skies, and the weather, which can change from sun to rain and back again within minutes. In my photographs I try to capture what I encounter, in plain black and white"
Romano Riedo’s pictures will be on display at Cinema Rex throughout the festival weekend . Mr. Romano will preset his work on Sunday at 12:00 at Cinéma Rex.
